Using baby clothes hangers to organise a baby wardrobe

With so many baby clothes to put away and store during your child’s development, it can sometimes feel all too overwhelming. Tops, bottoms, bodysuits, baby grows… the list feels endless, but we’re here to help make this process much easier for you. Using baby clothes hangers to help organise clothing is a space saver in drawers and also helps with items that can be difficult to fold.

However, even when we start hanging things up in a baby wardrobe, it can again start looking unorganised and messy. We’ve got some great tips using baby clothes hangers to help avoid this and to make your life much easier. We know there’s nothing worse than having piles of baby clothes sat around because there’s nowhere for them to go.

Before you start organising, you need to have the correct amount of storage to do so. A substantial amount of storage will help make the organisation process much easier and will give you extra room for any other clothes that you, your friends or your family buy. You can normally buy baby furniture in sets of two or three. These will include a cot, drawer space and a baby wardrobe. If you’re struggling to find baby furniture, head over to our baby clothes folding blog where we include a few of our suggestions.

It’s great if you can find a baby wardrobe that has two rails, this will make it much easier to organise different clothing. If you haven’t got one of these, we’ve also got some tips for one rail baby wardrobes.

Organising a baby wardrobe

If you can, hang up everything!

If you’re more into seeing all of the clothes your baby has instead of searching around in drawers, it’s better to hang everything up with baby clothes hangers. These hangers are best to use because of the size of baby’s clothing.

These items include onesies, jackets, dresses and anything that can be put onto a hanger. We recommend keeping pants and bottoms away from the wardrobe rail though, these are definitely better to fold. Learn how to fold baby clothes here.

It will also make it easier to organise your baby’s clothing if they’re all in the same place. Drawers are great but we tend to forget what drawers we’ve put certain items in – this can sometimes make organisation feel a little pointless!

Sort your baby clothes hangers

After you’ve hung up everything on the rail, start sorting the clothes by size and then colour. You may have clothes that are still too big for your baby. These can all be put together so when your baby is big enough, you can see everything they’re able to wear.

Sorting by colour also makes your baby wardrobe look amazing from a distance. This is perfect for open wardrobes where the clothing is always visible or if you just have a simple wall mounted rail.

We also recommend using a thinner style of baby clothes hangers. Some hangers are very thick and take up a lot of room that could be used for more clothing. It’s better to find hangers that are thinner but a high quality that will hold your baby clothing on for as long as you need.

Size dividers

Size dividers are a massive help whether you have not so many clothes or too many! Place the size dividers between the baby clothes hangers. These help you identify how many items you have of each size and allow you to make the most of them whilst your baby fits into them. This will help you make sure nothing goes to waste. There’s nothing worse than finding brand new clothes you forgot about that are now too small for your baby.

You can find size dividers in some supermarkets and also online from places like Amazon. However, if you don’t want to spend money on dividers, you can also find print outs which work just as good.

Use the same baby clothes hangers for all items

When you buy baby clothes from a supermarket or high street shop, you’re always asked if you’d like to keep the hangers. This can be handy for a short-term solution if you’re yet to buy more hangers for your baby wardrobe. However, in the long run, we suggest sticking to the same style and colour hanger for all of your items.

Store hangers are firstly not very good quality. They can break quite easily and that’s the last thing you want when organising your baby’s clothing. Secondly, different stores use different hangers. If you want your wardrobe to look organised and clean, having a variety of different hangers is going to stop this from happening.

For an organised baby wardrobe, it’s best to buy a bunch of the same hangers in bulk and say “no” to the cashier when she/he asks if you want to keep the hangers from the store.

Bottoms, shorts and skirts

As we said at the start, bottoms are better to be folded and put away instead of hung up on baby clothes hangers. This is because they don’t sit on a hanger too well and it’s easier to have your tops and bottoms separated for easiness.

If you’d still like to organise these into sizes, you can buy different containers and label them with the size of the clothing. Again, this will make it much easier to identify what you have and what’s too big or small.

Remove what you don’t need

There’s no point in keeping clothes in your baby wardrobe that are too small for them. After you know that they are not going to wear them again, put them into a box or container at the bottom of the wardrobe and label this with what you’d like to do with them. This can either be donating, selling or keeping the clothing for a future baby.

By clearing out the clothing that you will no longer use, it gives you more room in the wardrobe to fit new baby items. It also frees up baby clothes hangers for other items.

And that’s how you do it. By following these steps and tips, you will have a super organised baby wardrobe in no time. We hope this guide has helped you!
