Top 10 best Moses basket Mattresses

You may have bought your baby’s Moses basket but it won’t be much use without a mattress. There’s so much information on Moses basket mattresses and not everyone says the same thing. Some articles will tell you a soft mattress is not the one to pick. Whereas others will tell you this is what makes your baby their most comfortable.

We’re here to tell you what to look for when buying a Moses basket mattress and to show you our top 10 picks. Our picks are based around comfortability as well as safety and will ensure that your baby gets a great night sleep every time.

What are you looking for?

The most important thing to know when buying your baby’s mattress is what you’re actually looking for. There are a few different types of mattresses and some may be better for your baby than others. If you don’t know what these types of mattresses are, how will you know what to choose? What material you choose is down to you. However, there are pros and cons to all of them. We’ve made it easier for you by going through your options:

  • Spring Mattress. Spring mattresses are often made with open coil springs which are covered with foam or different materials. These are often more bouncy than other mattresses. The pros of this mattress are that they tend to offer more support than some other mattresses such as foam. However, they can come in a little bit more expensive.
  • Foam Mattress. These mattresses are made of a solid piece of foam which is usually very high density. The higher the density, the more firm it will be. A firmer mattress is better for your little one as it reduces the risk of them rolling over. Pros are that they are affordable for people on small budgets and are easy to clean if there are accidents. Cons include less support and are more likely to lose their shape quicker.
  • Natural Material Mattresses. If you’re looking for something eco-friendly then a natural mattress is what you need. These are filled with materials such as wool, natural latex or bamboo. The pros of this is that you can rest assured knowing that the mattress is chemical free and sustainable. However, they are more expensive than other mattresses and are not easy to find.
  • Pocket Spring Mattress. We’ve discussed the spring mattress, but what is a pocket spring mattress? It’s quite different to a normal spring mattress as every spring is wrapped in a cloth pocket. Meaning that each spring ca move independently, offering great support. This technology comes at a price though and may be out of a lot of people’s budgets.

How to find out if a mattress is safe

There are two standards that all baby mattresses should meet. It’s important to make sure that when buying a mattress, they comply to these standards.

The first standard it should meet is BS 1877-10:2011 + A1:2012. This standard covers the materials used, construction and dimensions. This means that this will ensure the materials used are safe and that it has been put together correctly and safely for use.

Secondly, you need to be sure that your baby’s mattress has passed fire safety and flammability tests. This is standard BS 7177:2008 + A1:2011.

If you’re buying a cot mattress, you should also look for a more recent standard that has been bought in. This is currently voluntary but is important to find out if your baby’s mattress complies with it. The BS EN 16890:2017 is a standard that covers the mattress firmness and shrinkage of the mattress cover. Both of these issues can put your baby at risk.

Testing Firmness

Now, we know that your baby’s mattress should be firm to avoid rolling over during the night. But how do you know if it’s firm enough? We’ve got some simple steps to help you find out:

  1. Press both hands against the centre and sides of your baby’s mattress.
  2. Your hand should not start to mould into the mattress and instead, you should feel the mattress pushing back against you.
  3. When you remove your hand, the mattress should go straight back into its original shape. If it stays there for a period of time, it may be worth investing in a new mattress.

How do I know if the mattress fits?

Buying the correct size mattress is really important. When you buy your Moses basket, it will tell you the dimensions of the mattress that you need to purchase. Stick by these dimensions as they are essential to your baby’s safety.

When you have bought the correct size, there are a few things you can do to make sure it fits correctly. When you place the mattress into the Moses basket, there should be no more than a 3cm gap between the mattress and basket. If it’s bigger than this, you need to find another mattress as it’s not safe for you little one.
